This is The Digital Story Podcast #567, Jan. 17, 2017. Today's theme is "Beyond Pretty Pictures." I'm Derrick Story.

Opening Monologue

When I first started teaching photography and writing books on the subject, the focus was how to tame your camera, make it see the world the way your eyes do. In other words, how to overcome the technical challenges of photography. That knowledge, plus my people skills, was also at the heart of my commercial work. But times have changed, and photographers have to find new ways to distinguish themselves from the pack. And that's the focus of today's show.

Beyond Pretty Pictures

It wasn't that long ago that people were mystified by camera settings. They really had no idea how to capture good color and exposures in the varying lighting conditions of day to day life. So when I would talk about exposure compensation, spot metering, white balance, and aperture settings, there was a large audience interested in what I had to say.

But computers have changed all of that. And I'm not talking about your trusty laptop, but the sophisticated computer that's inside your camera and your smartphone. And as a result, just about anyone can take a pretty picture.

Kaanapali, Maui.jpg

So where does that leave us who are passionate about the art and craft of photography? How do we distinguish ourselves from snapshooters who believe they can take our place? Here are a few ideas.

  • Composition: The Last Frontier - It's true that anyone can get good color and exposure consistently, but the computer doesn't instruct you what to shoot. And this is an area where you can excel.
  • Post Processing: Pimp Your Shots - I'm often amazed when I see an unfinished image on Instagram, especially with all the great filters and adjustments available in the Instagram app. And those pale in comparison to what we can do in Lightroom or Luminar on our computers. Improving our post processing chops can still help us elevate our game.
  • Lens Selection: Optical Prowess - Yes, the iPhone 7 Plus can emulate a telephoto lens for portraits, but interchangeable lens cameras still provide us with amazing optical diversity that just can't be matched on a smartphone.
  • Perspective: Going High and Low - If you watch people take pictures, they almost always stand the same way and shoot from the same angle. By getting up high and going very low, we can dramatically alter the feel for the shot.
  • Subject Selection: Expose a Different World - It's easy to stay in a comfort zone. But what if you explored an entirely new subject for your work?

Nikon launches 100th Anniversary Website. On July 25, 2017, Nikon will be celebrating its centennial anniversary. To honor that milestone, they've launched an anniversary site that features movies and an historical timeline. It's a fairly elaborate affair, but 100 years is a tremendous accomplishment.

This is The Digital Story Podcast #543, August 2, 2016. Today's theme is "Make Mine Macro, Please." I'm Derrick Story.

Opening Monologue

I want more macro in my life. I love being able to close-focus on a subject without having to change lenses. In fact, changeing lenses, although very necessary at times, is a real buzz kill, especially when I have a shot before that's ready to be captured. So, in today's show, I'm going to talk about why you may want to add more macro to your life.

Make Mine Macro, Please

I did a search of standard zoom lenses for micro four thirds on B&H, and came up with one lens that included real close-up capability, the Olympus M.ZUIKO ED 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3. I thought this was interesting, and not in a good way.

Macro-Mode-podcast.jpg

The reason why this has suddenly jumped out at me is because many of my analog zooms, plus my new Olympus TG-4 have macro functionality built right in. For example, on the analog side, the Pentax-A 35-70mm, Pentax-A 28-80mm, Contax/Zeiss 35-70mm f/3.4, and Minolta MD 28-80mm zooms all have terrific macro functionality. And because that feature is right there on the lens I already have mounted, I find myself moving closer more often.

So why does this make a difference? Well, here are a few reasons why I want macro.

  • Macro images immediately look different than other shots. If I'm presenting a slideshow and I drop a killer macro image in the group, I can hear the gasps.
  • I learn more about the natural world. I thought lavender flowers looked one way. Then I take a macro shot of one and discover that they are far more intricate and beautiful that I ever realized.
  • Darn handy for photographing business cards, labels, tags, and all the other bits of information in life that I don't want to write down.

Part of the reason why I'm disappointed that more of my Olympus lenses don't have built-in macro is because my cameras have built-in IS, one of the most important features for handheld close up photography.

So here's my bottom line: If you're not shooting closeup shots regularly, then I recommend that you find an easy way to do so. Otherwise, you're missing so much of our wonderful world.

In the News

Your Photos Could Be Illegally for Sale on Amazon via PetaPixel.

The Internet has become the wild wild west of copyright infringement, and the fact that so many photos are illegally republished around without permission and/or attribution makes enforcement tough for the photographers behind them. If you've ever shared your images on the Web, there's one big-name place they could show up for sale without your permission: Amazon.com.

So instead of grabbing copyrighted photos from photographers' websites, it seems that some Amazon sellers, such as HDpicsnwall may have harvested photos from other websites that illegally offer copyrighted photos for free. The seller then described the photos as "public domain" and began selling prints and products on Amazon.

Scott Kelby on the New Lightroom App for Apple TV

By now you may have heard that Adobe released a Lightroom viewing app for the 4th gen Apple TV. Scott Kelby has an informative and entertaining Q&A about it on his blog. I thought you might get a kick out of it.

  • Q. What will be the answer to every question in this Q&A? A. It will be "No."
  • Q. Will it work on older Apple TVs? A. No.
  • Q. Can you add background music to the slideshow? A. No
  • Q. Can you edit photos in it? A. No.
  • Q. Can you change the order of the images using it? A. No.
  • Q. Is there a version for Roku? A. No.
  • Q. Does it work with more than one catalog? A. No.
  • Q. Does it work on the Amazon Fire? A. No.
  • Q. Couldn't you just use Airplay from your iPhone or iPad and still see all your images on TV, and then do everything that Lightroom Mobile can do, but seeing it all on your TV screen, and wouldn't that also work on older Apple TVs as well? A. Yes, you could, and yes it would.
  • Q. I thought you said all the answers would be 'No." A. OK, No.

"Well, there ya go. It's new, it's free, don't whine."

This week on The Digital Story Photography Podcast: "Cuba Movies and eBook, T-Shirt Giveaway, White House Lifts Photo Ban - all of this and more on today's show with Derrick Story.

Weekly Update - "Instagram stores higher resolution images". DP Connect reports: "After its recent app update it seems Instagram has further improvements up its sleeve, as the mobile image sharing platform has started storing higher resolution images on its servers. In the app and on the web interface, as before, images are still displayed at the small 640 x 640 pixel size, but a look at the website source code reveals that images are now actually stored at 1080 x 1080 pixels."

In other news... "White House lifts 40-year ban on photography during public tours" Imaging-Resource reports: "40 years ago, the White House put a ban on photography during public tours. Now, the ban has been lifted, with First Lady Michelle Obama posting a video on Instagram announcing the White House will once again allow photography during public tours."
"Although the ban has been lifted" there are still limitations on what imagery you can capture. Specifically, you're not able to use video cameras, interchangeable lens cameras, tripods, selfie sticks or flash. Smartphones and compact cameras with a lens no longer than 3 inches (stills only) are permitted on the public tour route as long as their use does not interfere with other guests' enjoyment of the tour.

Can you tell a story with just one photograph? Yes, indeed. In this week's podcast, I talk about narrative - using your skills and creativity to compose an image that stimulates the viewer's imagination, tells a story. By way of example, I talk about the work of fine art photographer, Lise Sarfati, who I think does an excellent job of creating narrative in her photographs. This is a different form of photographic expression, much less technical than HDR, more controlling that street photography. See what you think after listening to this week's show.

Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) promises better speed and stability. For the most part, I think Apple has delivered the goods. But I also sense that expectations might be a little high for this evolutionary release of the Mac operating system. In this podcast, I discuss my clean install of Snow Leopard from a photographer's point of view.

You might also want to take a look at my brief article, Snow Leopard Notes for Photographers. Other tidbits include Nikon's compatibility report for Capture NX2 users and HP's driver instructions for 10.6 users.

Canon 30D

There are two types of digital camera disasters: those we bring upon ourselves and those of which we have no control. In this podcast I talk about both.

One of the pitfalls that I warn to stay away from is canned air, and I recommend to use blower bulbs instead. My favorite is the Giottos Rocket Air Blaster. But even with the Rocket, be sure to use it with care since you're inside your digital SLR where all the sensitive components reside.

I also find Ziploc bags very useful for protecting my cameras from humidity and condensation. Always have one with you that's large enough to contain your camera and lens.

Finally, keep an eye out for firmware updates for your camera. Sometimes they add new features to your model, but often they fix problems and are well worth the effort of installing.

Now that I've piqued your curiosity, it's time to listen to today's audio show titled, "Camera Mayhem - Self-Inflicted and Otherwise." You can download the podcast here (30 minutes).
